RESIDENCE Tanz meets…#3 Rotem Weissman

Rotem Weissman nein9kollektiv and Tai Rona

The piece is inspired by an Israeli song named ”Agada Yapanit” (”Japanese Legend”), written by Ehud Manor and composed by Ariel Zilber in 1972. The lyrics tell a story of a hunter who, at the end of an unsuccessful hunting day, encounters a pair of swans in a lake and vents his frustration by shooting an arrow at one of them. At night, the female swan follows him to his dreams in the form of a girl, weeping over the death of her loved one she calls for the hunter to return to the lake. The next day, the hunter retraces his steps to the lake to witness how the swan tears/pokes/pecks her own flesh to death.

The musician Tai Rona manipulated the music that support and give the atmosphere of the work, as a representation of the song. The song’s narrative explores themes of disconnection and connection, and concludes with a sense of absence and desolation. In this process, the artist will explore the dissociation of meaning and systems of significance. How can the immediate meaning that movement generates be played with, emphasized, manipulated, rotated, or transformed? How can the artist, as creator, unfold meaningless\meaningful interpretation?

These questions are relevant to our everyday lives, particularly in these times, as they bring to the foreground the uncertainty haunting those aspects of life we used to regard with certainty. The questions inform the choreographic approach and structure, playing with the tension between chaos and pure order in the pursuit of organic moments. Furthermore, they inform the atmosphere and dramaturgy of the journey.
