Every day, every night, sometimes long, sometimes short, all alone, in pairs or collectively – we sleep, lie down, relax – we wake, toss and turn, dream. Lying and sleeping are states experienced universally by all living beings, but in which each individual is radically thrown back on itself.

The two-part performance installation first takes the audience on a vertical journey of sleep as an everyday experience and, at the same time, a cultural and art-historical phenomenon. A performer offers inspiration, occasions for reflection and opens up perspectives of rest and restlessness. The audience is then immersed in a horizontal space of experience. The room-filling installation literally places the audience under a projected sky of reclining, sleeping individuals.

The project “Himmelskörper”, developed by the choreographer Barbara Cleff and the composer Nicolás Kretz, unfolds a complex image and sound space consisting of two audio levels composed for this purpose and a video level. The viewers, lying themselves, are invited to rethink and to experience their ideas of sleep.

A physical and digital performance for 12 persons at Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof Wuppertal.
