Together, they venture into a meeting of different cultures, life stories and artistic styles. In doing so, they ask themselves: What risks does an encounter with a stranger entail? And how strange are we really to one another?

Jan Möllmer lives and works in Wuppertal. His artistic career has been shaped by his many years’ work as a choreographer of his own pieces, including with his dance company Peculiar Man. He was a guest dancer at the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch for many years. He has also collaborated with the choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou and has performed in his productions in more than 30 cities worldwide. In contrast, Chang Chien-Hao lives and works in Taipei, where he runs the Chang Dance Theatre company together with his three brothers. He began training in contemporary and classical dance at an art academy whilst still a teenager.

Both artists explore the defence mechanisms activated in the body before and during a new encounter, and examine how these might be overcome. They transform movements, images, texts and artistic experiences into kinetic energy. The result is a hybrid event combining dance, danger and play. The audience witnesses a process in which two men from very different backgrounds attempt to define and negotiate a relationship with one another. Are they brothers, partners, friends – or do they remain strangers to one another?

Following the showing, a 25-minute dance documentary will be screened, tracing the artistic creative process and the collaboration between the two choreographers. The event will round off with an artist talk featuring Jan Möllmer and Chang Chien-Hao, which will provide insights into the project’s development and offer an opportunity for questions and discussion with the audience.
