Zerfliessende Grenzen

(Dissolving boundaries – is this art or freedom?)

Panel discussion & film documentary “Fountains” (deufert&plischke)

When exhibitions are cancelled or theatre productions are withdrawn, the significance of art and thus its promise of freedom is thrown into doubt. The dispute over art quickly becomes a social conflict and the boundaries between art, freedom and ethics blur. What can we learn from this?

The evening invites regional actors and artistic contributions to the discussion: Locally active artists and institutions in particular are increasingly coming into direct conflict with their environment and have to deal with a wide range of reactions to their art. How can hostility be dealt with in a tense political and social climate? Can criticism of (un)intentional provocation be made artistically productive and how can the boundaries of artistic freedom be democratically negotiated?

Following the discussion with Thusnelda Mercy and Pascal Merighi (artistic direction Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof) and several members of a newly founded network of Artist Run Spaces in North Rhine-Westphalia, deufert&plischke (head of spinnereischwelm) will show the artistic film documentation of their project “Fountains”, which deals with the taboo of leaking bodies.

Guests: Thusnelda Mercy and Pascal Merighi (Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof), Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke (spinnereischwelm) as well as artists from dott – Dortmunder Tanz- und Theaterszene, Atelier Automatique Bochum, Spacelab Essen, Kunsthaus Mitte Oberhausen.

Presentation: Lea Gerschwitz
